gecekondu plus

what: exhibitions, banners, etc.
where: berlin, germany
when: 2021

this project hosted a variety of sub-projects in and around the gecekondu at kottbusser tor. the gecekondu is the protest house of the tenant initiative kotti & co, was transformed into a flexible exhibition space in public space as part of this initiative.

the gecekondu has served as a meeting point for kotti & co and other social and urban initiatives since its foundation in 2012. it offers free multilingual social and tenancy law advice and is also a space for informal and cultural gatherings – an inclusive and open meeting place where everything from fast-breaking to children’s birthdays is celebrated. various types of events also take place here.

the gecekondu is not only a meeting point but also a spatial object passed by many people every day. it is a frequent stop for city tours, offering visitors insights into the history of yesterday and today’s rebellious and migrant kreuzberg. in this sense, the gecekondu acts as a kind of medium and “social sculpture,” a place for learning, an open space, and above all, a strong symbol of a neighborhood standing together in solidarity against repression and racism.

the project was funded by projekt fonds urbane praxis berlin
